A new Forbes magazine list puts metropolitan Rochester in the top third of the country’s 100 Best Bang for the Buck communities.
The five-county Rochester metropolitan statistical area provides its residents with the country’s 29th best bang for the buck, Forbes states. To arrive at the rankings, the magazine compared the country’s 100 largest MSAs’ housing prices, foreclosure rates, vacancies, unemployment rates, jobs outlooks and average times needed to travel between work and home.
By Forbes calculations, the Rochester MSA, which takes in the counties of Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Livingston and Orleans, ranked one slot higher than No. 30 Albany, Schenectady, Troy region, but 12 places lower than the 17th place Buffalo, Niagara Falls MSA and 14 slots below the 15th place Syracuse area.
Bringing up the rear on the list are the Chicago, New York City, Miami and Los Angeles metro areas. Those cities respectively claimed the 97th, 98th, 99th and 100th slots on the list.
Like regions such as the Omaha, Neb., MSA, which claimed the top slot on the Forbes list, Rochester and the other Upstate New York areas in the top 50, are benefiting from not seeing home prices shoot to astronomical levels during the housing bubble, the magazine reports.
