Thruway Authority mulls wind project

The New York State Thruway Authority is the latest state agency to explore the development of wind power, issuing a request for information Monday from the wind turbine power industry to possibly build turbines along the Thruway.

The Thruway Authority issued the request to assist New York in reaching its renewable energy portfolio goals and to increase the agency’s revenue, officials said.

“The Thruway Authority is eager to hear from the wind power development industry as to how it can work towards a more sustainable environment and making New York a greener state, benefiting all New Yorkers,” Executive Director Michael Fleischer said in the statement.

Decisions on whether to pursue the initiative will depend largely on the response the Thruway Authority receives, officials said. A request for proposals likely would not be issued before summer.

The New York Power Authority also is exploring wind power. That agency issued requests for proposals in December for off-shore wind-power projects in Lake Ontario after sending out requests to explore the viability of the initiative in April 2009.
