Jewish Senior Life to mark 90 years with celebrations

Jewish Senior Life will mark 90 years of serving Rochester-area seniors with a yearlong series of events, slated to culminate with a gala featuring Tony Award-winning actress Bernadette Peters.

The Jewish Home of Rochester has evolved from a single house on St. Paul Street to today’s full continuum of care and senior living on Winton Road South in Brighton.

“As Jewish Senior Life marks nearly a century of service, our hearts are full from the community we’ve supported since our earliest days as the Jewish Home,” said President and CEO Daniel Katz, in a statement. “Throughout 2010, we will celebrate every area of our organization, which has successfully endeavored to inspire people to find joy in their life, family and friends, together with the finest staff in the profession.”

The planned events include:

  • Publication of a new booklet titled “Honoring the Promise,” which will serve as a 12-year addendum to update the book “A Family Among Families: The Jewish Home of Rochester Since 1920,” which was published in 1998.
  • Commissioning of a painting from Rochester artist Lynn Feldman. It will hang in the Jewish Home and serve as the new booklet’s cover.
  • Rebuilding and dedication in May of the road into the Jewish Home, including landscaping and new light posts made possible through a donation by Arthur Rock in honor of his mother, Reva Rock, and grandmother, Gitel Cohen, one of the original five women who founded the Jewish Home in 1920.
  • Digitization of hundreds of photos taken at the Jewish Home over the last 90 years.
  • June’s Golden Alliance Tent Event, which will take place on the grounds of the Jewish Home, recognizing donors to the Jewish Home Foundation.
  • A closing gala at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center Oct. 17 that will feature Peters.
