Rochester airport ranks among most affordable

Rochester Business Journal
July 16, 2010

Greater Rochester International Airport ranks 14th among the 101 most affordable airports in the country, Monroe County officials announced Friday.

Average fares at the Rochester airport are $368, data compiled by travel website Cheapflights Inc. shows. That compares with average fares of $426 at Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, ranked 33rd; and $437 at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, ranked 39th.

The Rochester airport has been able to attract low-cost carriers such as JetBlue Airways Corp. and AirTran Airways, which drives down operating costs and keep annual spending increases below the rate of inflation for each of the last four years, airport director David Damelio said.

The average fare out of Rochester has decreased by more than $100, or by 27 percent, since 1995, county officials said in May. The decline is the third-largest in the country.

Congratulations to the airport Director and the County for turning this situation around. It wasn't that long ago when our airport was among the airports with the highest fares.
