Rolls-Royce Group to buy R. Brooks

Rolls-Royce Group PLC plans to acquire a Wayne County company.

The British company, which valued the gross assets acquired at $14 million, said buying R. Brooks Associates Inc. will grow its global civil nuclear business.

R. Brooks Associates, based in Williamson, provides inspection and recovery systems for the nuclear power industry. It designs and manufactures remote and robotic tooling.

“Brooks has an enviable reputation for unique inspection technology and it has some of the best people in the industry,” said Lawrie Haynes, president of Rolls-Royce’s nuclear division, in a statement when the deal was announced Thursday.

Rolls-Royce develops inspection, repair and refurbishment systems for operational reactors, providing technical and engineering support to governments and utility operators. The company’s reactor support operation represents more than 50 percent of its civil nuclear business and includes support to operational reactors in 20 countries across Europe, North America and Asia.

R. Brooks, Rolls-Royce officials said, has a well-established presence in France and is considered a market leader in secondary steam generator inspections in the United States.

In February, R. Brooks acquired a French robotics technology company, Robotic Concepts SAS, whose products are used in the nuclear power industry in France.

The move came roughly two years after R. Brooks opened its first European office at Henley House in Barnwood, Gloucestershire, UK.

The company employs 104 people, with 86 of them in Williamson.

Rolls-Royce’s nuclear skilled employee base includes some 2,900 employees in the United Kingdom, France, United States and Canada.

R. Brooks was founded in 1984 by Raymond Brooks and partners as a contract engineering and health physics personnel service company for the nuclear power industry.

Raymond Brooks is CEO and co-owns the firm with John Gay, chief operating officer.
