A contracted employee allowed unauthorized computer access to customer information at Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. or New York State Electric & Gas Corp., company officials said Monday.
The state Public Service Commission announced it will investigate.
An employee at an independent software development consulting firm contracted by RG&E and NYSEG granted access to a customer information system containing Social Security numbers, dates of birth and, in some cases, financial institution account numbers, company officials said.
There is no evidence customer information has been misused or of any malicious intent, officials said. The companies are consulting with law enforcement and computer forensic exports.
“We take our responsibility to protect customer information very seriously and we have robust information technology security measures in place,” RG&E and NYSEG president Mark Lynch said in a statement.
Customers can call 1-877-736-4495 for assistance.
The companies have enlisted Experian PLC to offer customers the option of free credit monitoring for one year, officials said.
