A county-by-county analysis of progress benchmarks conducted by a joint venture of the Rochester Area Community Foundation and the United Way of Greater Rochester Inc. details a mix of challenges and improvements for the region.
ACT Rochester released regionwide results in March for its 2012 Community Report Card, and Thursday released results broken down by county. The report looked at 12 topic areas and the extent of progress in these areas since 2000. The report covered Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne and Wyoming counties.
“We got a clear message from the more than 225 people who attended our Community Report Card event that while the regional report was eye-opening, more county-specific information was needed to drive action,” said Ann Johnson, ACT Rochester program director.
The report showed that in some areas the region is better than the state averages.
Ontario County had the highest median household income in the region at roughly $56,500, above the state average of $55,600 and national average of $51,900.
Wayne County had the highest rate of technology teachers per student in the region with 18 technology teachers per 10,000 students in public schools. Overall, all seven counties are performing better than state averages in areas of education and housing, with six also outperforming the state in children and youth, economy and financial self-sufficiency.
As for long-term trends, most of the counties are either making improvements or results are unchanged, ACT Rochester officials said. Only transportation has improved by more than 1 percent in all seven counties. In the area of education, all but Wyoming County have shown progress.
There were areas of underperformance as well, ACT officials noted. For community engagement, only Monroe County beat the state average score. The county still has declined in progress in this area, as have all six other counties, the report shows.
“With these county report cards now available, we encourage neighbors and community leaders to locally and regionally work closely together to change what is not working and build on what is,” said Tom Argust, chairman of ACT Rochester’s advisory committee.
The seven individual report cards are available at ACTRochester.org.
