Yoga instructor helps her clients find balance

Lori Austin believes the power to become and do anything lies within.
That philosophy is the reason she chose to name her business Power Within Yoga Inc., which does business as Power Within Yoga and Fitness.
"I urge people to work within the present moment rather than beat themselves up about the past or worry about what the future may hold," Austin says. "We all have the power now and within us to grow in a positive direction."
Power Within offers personal fitness training in a private setting, as well as private yoga and Pilates instruction. The individual focus affords Austin the ability to pay attention to detail and alignment. She also offers nutritional counseling, emphasizing the connection between exercise and nutrition.
Austin believes the integration of mind, body and spirit helps bring balance, peace, health and happiness.
"It is all connected," she says.
Her most recent offering is Thai yoga bodywork. She has received a certification in this system, which Austin says is relatively new to the Rochester area.
Thai yoga bodywork is a system based on yoga, Ayurveda-the ancient Indian science of health and medicine-and martial arts. During the session, Austin counterbalances and levers the client's body with her own, working with the breath, gravity and touch along energy points throughout the body.
The result, Austin says, is bringing the body's energy into balance. The system also releases muscular tension, improves circulation and boosts the immune system.
"It's a great healing modality," she says.
Austin, 47, started Power Within roughly four years ago. The business was originally on University Avenue but recently moved to a location on Circle Street in the city.
Austin has a background in finance and worked in banking before opening her business. She began teaching Pilates but soon expanded into yoga and nutritional coaching. Austin relishes working in a field that is focused on helping people feel better.
"It doesn't feel like work," she says.
Power Within's clients range in age from high schoolers to senior citizens. The amount of time they meet varies as well. Some clients come in three times a week, others twice a month. Austin also offers group yoga classes at homes and businesses and takes speaking engagements on health and wellness.
The business is open seven days a week and is competitively priced, she says. It costs $55 an hour for personal training, which includes nutrition counseling. Thai yoga bodywork appointments can last 60 or 90 minutes and cost $70 and $90, respectively.
A proponent of continuing education, Austin says she always is learning about her field.
"This is a business that is constantly evolving, and my goal is to be on the forefront of research," she says.
