Business coalition seeks delay of proposed Thruway toll hike

The Unshackle Upstate coalition of businesses and trade groups asked the New York State Thruway’s board of directors to delay plans to increase tolls until an audit of the public authority is completed.

The thruway authority is pitching a 45 percent increase in tolls for trucks with at least three axles.

Unshackle Upstate made its request on Tuesday in a letter to board chairman Howard Milstein.

“Given the tenuous state of New York’s economy, we believe that Chairman Milstein should engage in a thorough review of the thruway authority’s operations to determine whether this commercial vehicle toll increase is truly necessary,” said Brian Sampson, Rochester-based executive director of Unshackle Upstate, in a statement.

Unshackle Upstate and 19 other business organizations recently announced plans to band together to fight the proposed increase.
