Batavia project gets preliminary OK for federal funds

The Genesee Gateway Local Development Corp. has received preliminary approval for $1 million in federal funds to complete infrastructure improvements at the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park in Batavia.

The money is to help construct an aquifer-direct water system needed for the $206 million yogurt manufacturing facility being constructed there through a joint venture between PepsiCo Inc. and Theo Muller Group called Muller Quaker Dairy. Once completed in 2013, it will be one of the largest yogurt plants in the country, and is expected to create more than 180 new jobs in Upstate New York, officials said.

The water system also is to be used by other businesses at the site, including Alpina Foods LLC.

The award, through the Economic Development Administration, has been granted, pending receipt of final support documents, Sen. Charles Schumer’s office said.
