Harris Corp.’s RF Communications division has been awarded a $34 million contract to design and deploy a radio system for first responders in Saint Mary’s County, Md.

The 13-site system will provide improved radio coverage for police, fire and emergency medical service personnel who serve the county’s 764 square miles, the company said.

“We designed a system that meets the critical needs of Saint Mary’s County first responders, who clearly emphasized their need for greater coverage throughout the county,” said Stephen Marschilok, president of RF Communications’ public safety and professional communications business, in a statement.

The contract includes 15 years of maintenance for long-term service and support.
The company also announced Tuesday a $6.5 million contract from the U.S. Air Force for handheld radios. The radios will be used by civil engineer teams for ground-based missions, the company said.

Rochester-based RF Communications employs 2,200 local workers.
