Traffic switch set for Monday night at Brighton project

A traffic switch at the diverging diamond road reconstruction project in Brighton has been rescheduled for Monday night, officials announced.

The switch, at I-590 and Winton Road, begins at 9 p.m. and continues until 6 a.m. Tuesday, the state Department of Transportation said. The switch was scheduled for 6 a.m. Saturday until sometime during evening hours but was postponed because of concerns about bad weather conditions.

The diverging diamond interchange requires traffic on Winton Road to drive briefly on the opposite side of the road by crossing at signalized intersections, allowing a free flow of traffic onto I-590, officials said.

The design helps traffic move more quickly and efficiently, reducing congestion and increasing safety, DOT officials said. The construction schedule calls for road work to continue until October, officials said, with weekend closures scheduled for Sept. 14 to 16 and Sept. 21 to 23.
