L-3 Global Communications Systems Inc. in Victor has received a $36.3 million contract from the U.S. Army.

Under the Army’s $36 million contract, the firm’s local workforce will upgrade 3,850 existing satellite terminals.

Also, the Department of Defense plans to increase by $100 million the potential value of the $500 million contract announced in June for the company to produce new satellite terminals for the military.

As a result of these contracts, the company anticipates increasing its current 155 employees by roughly 20 percent over the next six months. The contracts were announced Thursday by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

L-3 GCS supplies deployable satellite communications products, systems and airtime for government agencies, broadcast media, insurers and other commercial customers. The products are used by the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security as well as other federal agencies.
