Thomas Golisano has made a $20 million matching gift to build a new children’s hospital in Florida.

The donation is a challenge grant to the Fort Myers and Naples communities in southwest Florida to raise $20 million of its own, which Golisano then will match. The hospital, which would be named Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, would be part of the Lee Memorial Health System.

The existing children’s hospital is inside another hospital, HealthPark Medical Center.

“I have deep admiration for the heroic work of the physicians and clinical staff of the Children’s Hospital, who every day provide skilled and passionate care, and are saving the lives of sick and injured children in Southwest Florida,” Golisano said in a statement. “This gift comes as my personal commitment to help Lee Memorial Health System build a hospital where all children in Southwest Florida will receive the best possible care close to home.”

His gift had been initially announced as an anonymous donation on Aug. 3 by the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. When fulfilled, the gift would be the largest single philanthropic gift in the hospital’s history, officials said.

The hospital is expected to open in 2016.
