The Wegmans Food Markets Inc. store currently under construction on East Avenue is slated to open in May, company officials said Wednesday afternoon.

The 100,000 square-foot store will also feature an Italian restaurant to go along with its Market Café.

Wegmans in March 2010 inked an agreement to purchase the last property in the way of its plans for a new East Avenue store. Wegmans' existing store, one of its busiest in the region, is 42,000 square feet. Parking also will be expanded.

Wegmans has 81 stores in New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The company placed fourth on Fortune magazine’s most recent list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
