A gunman lured first responders to a Webster home fire early Monday and shot four volunteer firefighters, police say. Two of the firefighters died.
Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said two of the firefighters were killed and two others hospitalized.
Webster Police Department Lt. Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were killed. Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter are being treated for gunshot wounds at University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital. They are in guarded condition, Nicole Staffen M.D. said.
“The shooter is believed to be deceased at the scene,” Pickering said, adding he died from a gunshot wound. They were waiting to determine if it was self-inflicted, Pickering said. Police have not yet released the name of the shooter.
The shooting Monday morning happened at 191 Lake Road. The call came in at 5:45 a.m.
Four homes were destroyed by fire, police said. Four additional houses sustained damage, Pickering said. The investigation is continuing, and Pickering said it was an active crime scene.
