Wegmans raises $1.38 million for food banks

Forty-five Wegmans locations in the Greater Rochester area, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania helped raise $1.38 million for various food banks.

The total includes nearly $668,000 raised in the Rochester area for Foodlink Inc., through Wegmans Food Markets Inc.’s fall 2012 checkout scanning campaign for hunger relief.

The campaign allowed customers to donate money at checkout with 100 percent of the proceeds going to each store’s local food bank.

“We’re thankful for our customers and employees who step up to give in such a generous way,” said Linda Lovejoy, community relations manager for Wegmans, in a statement. “Their donations at checkout help reduce hunger that exists right in our own neighborhoods and communities.”

Since 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $21 million hunger relief, including a total of $2.3 million in all of 2012.
