February 11, 2013

Pittsford native Abby Wambach will attend the Rochester Lancers’ Feb. 24 Major Indoor Soccer League home game against Milwaukee and serve as honorary captain, team officials said Monday.

Wambach’s appearance at Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial is her first here since being named best female soccer player in the world by the International Federation of Association Football.

The Our Lady of Mercy High School graduate and FIFA World Player of the Year is to perform a ceremonial first kick and speak at halftime of the Lancers’ game against the Wave.

Wambach is slated to play for the Western New York Flash of the U.S. Soccer Federation’s fledgling National Women’s Soccer League beginning this spring. The Flash’s home matches are at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
