The University of Rochester Medical Center’s James P. Wilmot Cancer Center has made acting director Jonathan Friedberg M.D.’s appointment permanent, officials said Thursday.
He has served as acting director since July 2012.
A clinical researcher whose work centers on lymphoma therapies, Friedberg outlined a strategic plan to advance and expand the Wilmot center. Elements include:
- Researching ways to attack cancer by targeting malignant cells’ vulnerabilities;
- Developing new regional programs and forging bonds with area oncology providers to extend the center’s reach;
- Provide care through multidisciplinary teams, including oncologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists and others; and
- Development of a cancer survivorship program to work with cancer patients who have completed courses of radiation or chemotherapy.
“I have no doubt that Wilmot's broad mission—to deliver the most advanced cancer care, to expand the reach of our services regionally and to be a leader in cancer research—will thrive under Jonathan's leadership,” URMC CEO Bradford Berk M.D. said.
