UR Laser Lab gets bump in funding to $66 million

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics is set to receive $66 million in fiscal 2014, a $7.25 million increase from last year’s funding level, Rep. Louise Slaughter’s office said Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Slaughter wrote to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water advocating for an increase in funding for the laser lab. Today, the full House Appropriations Committee approved the funding increase as part of its yearly Energy and Water appropriations bill. Committee passage sets up a possible floor vote and negotiations with the Senate to reconcile spending bills.

“With our educated workforce and top-notch universities, Rochester has become a national leader in innovative research, and I'm glad that this funding increase will help us continue that trend," Slaughter, D-Perinton, said in a statement. "The work that is being done at the laser lab moves us closer to energy independence, enhances our national security, and supports over one thousand jobs both at the laser lab and in spinoff companies that benefit from the lab's research.”
