SUNY college to transform former Kodak facility to solar energy center

SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is setting up shop in a former Eastman Kodak Co. building in Greece, as part of a $100 million initiative that proponents say will attract solar energy companies to the area.

The Albany-based institution is renovating the 57,000-square-foot building at 115 Canal Landing Blvd. in the Canal Ponds Business Park for its Photovoltaic Manufacturing and Technology Development facility. The building previously housed Kodak’s microelectromechanical systems’ inkjet facility. A late fall opening is expected.

The project includes a 20,000-square-foot cleanroom and enables more than 100 jobs, state leaders said in an announcement Wednesday. As part of the project, over $19 million in tools and equipment formerly utilized by SVTC Technology Corp., a Silicon Valley-based solar energy company, are being relocated to the site.

The U.S. Department of Energy is providing nearly $11 million in cash funding to support procurement and installation of tools and equipment, with investment from private industry partners expected to exceed $65 million to support the development and operation of the facility. New York State will invest $4.8 million through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

The Rochester Business Journal first reported the sale of the facility in March.
