Event to mark completion of canal projects in Fairport

Local and state representatives are to convene Friday to christen two projects completed on the south bank of the Erie Canal.

New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales and New York State Canal Corp. Director Brian Stratton will join Fairport Mayor Frederick May for a ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m. at the Stop 22 dockmaster’s office

A new breakwall and pedestrian promenade were constructed between the lift bridge and Parker Street bridge, and additional improvements were included in that area.

The breakwall and promenade were financed with a $584,000 grant from the New York Department of State’s Environmental Protection Fund waterfront development program, along with a $158,000 Restore New York grant from Empire State Development Corp. for demolition and asbestos abatement.

The grants were matched by funds from the Fairport Industrial Development Agency.

The upgraded promenade is crucial to the village’s $1.5 million plan to redevelop the former Department of Public Works site, officials said.

The additional improvements were funded by the New York State Canal Corp. through the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.
