Officials dedicate vacant lot converted to green space

A vacant lot at the corner of Dewey and Ravine avenues has been transformed into green space as part of Project Scion 2013.

The location was dedicated Wednesday, with city officials and project designers in attendance.

The project, titled “The Gateway,” resulted in an entrance to the Dewey-Lexington Avenue neighborhood. It features boulder seats, a rolling hill for children, outdoor chess tables and a small library area surrounded by gardens and trees.

An art walk with painted pavers created by the project team was made by neighborhood residents.

“It is wonderful to see this lot formally transformed into the Gateway, a garden and green space that can be used and enjoyed by all,” Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards said.

Project Scion, in its second year, is the creation of landscape designers Bruce Zaretsky and Sharon Coates of Zaretsky and Associates Inc., and Pietro Furgiuele of Waterford Tilling.

The endeavor turns vacant city lots into community green spaces that will serve as town squares and enhance vitality in neighborhoods.

Project Scion 2012 transformed a vacant city lot at Jay and Child streets in Rochester’s Josana neighborhood.
