McCall, Pataki to head new tax relief commission

Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled a tax relief commission Wednesday that will try to find ways to reduce state property and business taxes.

The New York State Tax Relief Commission includes former governor George Pataki and Carl McCall, chairman of the SUNY board of trustees, who will serve as co-chairmen.

New York State Business Council President and CEO Heather Briccetti; former president of the state AFL-CIO Denis Hughes; former state budget director Dall Forsythe; former state tax commissioner James Wetzler; William Rudin, senior advisor at Brown & Weinraub PLLC and Erie Community College President Jack Quinn.

The commission’s recommendations are due Dec. 6 and will be included in Cuomo’s 2014 State of the State address, a statement from Cuomo’s office said.

“The responsible budgets and fiscal reforms put in place over the last three years have put the state in a position to seriously tackle the tax capital mentality that for too long has driven businesses and families from New York,” Cuomo said in the statement.

“I look forward to receiving the commission’s recommendations this December so we can include measures in next year’s legislative agenda to help bring further relief to New York’s taxpayers.”
