New car sales continue to outpace 2012 numbers, despite a drop in sales from August to September, the Rochester Automobile Dealers’ Association Inc. reported this week.

Dealers sold 3,821 new vehicles last month, down more than 20 percent from 4,800 in August, but up more than 5 percent from 3,627 a year ago. Used-car sales fell nearly 18 percent from 2,057 in August to 1,696 in September and were down more than 9 percent from 1,869 a year ago.

New and used car sales typically fall from August to September, RADA historical data shows.

Auto dealers in Monroe County sold 5,517 new and used vehicles combined in September, down nearly 20 percent from 6,857 in August, but relatively unchanged from 5,496 in September 2012.

Some 52,536 cars and trucks have been sold in Monroe County this year, up nearly 5 percent from 50,062 in the same period last year.
