Grant Holcomb, the director of the University of Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery since 1985, plans to retire effective July 1, 2014.

Holcomb is MAG's sixth director. During his tenure, the gallery has staged high-profile exhibitions featuring the work of Maxfield Parrish, Edgar Degas, Georgia O’Keeffe and others.

Holcomb recently presided over a year-long celebration of the gallery’s 100th anniversary and the opening of Centennial Sculpture Park.

“Grant has shaped the gallery’s internal and external spaces and enhanced its collections in ways that will benefit art lovers for generations to come,” UR president Joel Seligman said in a statement.

Board of Managers president Jim Durfee will lead a search committee to find Holcomb's successor.

“Grant Holcomb has built a singular legacy of quality, character and community engagement,” Durfee said in a statement. “No one has been more effective at connecting diverse audiences with art.”
