Cemeteries earn certification for eco-friendliness

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and Ascension Garden received certification from the Green Burial Council, a national organization committed to eco-friendly death care through extensive outreach with Green Burial Certification.

They are the first Catholic cemeteries in New York to receive Green Burial Certification, cemetery officials said. At each cemetery, there are sections specifically set aside for natural burials. Green or natural burials are conducted with no interruptions in the ecosystem.

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery was founded in 1871 and is on Lake Avenue. Holy Sepulchre in 2010 opened Ascension Garden in Henrietta, at Pinnacle and Williams roads.

St. Francis Meadow opened in a wooded section of Ascension Garden. The first natural burial recently took place at Holy Sepulchre in the Trinity section.

“We’ve designed these green burial sites so that there is no interruption in the natural eco-system,” said James Weisbeck, executive director of Holy Sepulchre and Ascension Garden, in a statement. “This certification is not only a distinction for our cemeteries and the work we do, but furthers our commitment to serving the needs of our increasingly green-conscious patrons both present and future.”
