Worthington Cylinders to close Medina plant

Rochester Business Journal
December 13, 2013

Worthington Cylinders, a Worthington Industries Inc. company, said Thursday it would close its plant in Medina, Orleans County, and move the operations to a plant in Wisconsin.

The local site—formerly BenzOmatic—employs 155 workers, a WARN notice filed with the state Department of Labor shows.

The plant will close by May 1, the filing states. Layoffs will occur in stages beginning March 1 and will run through the closing date, with a few employees remaining after the closing to wind down operations, the company said.

The company manufactures hand-held torches, solder, accessories and related products.

Ohio-based Worthington Industries purchased BernzOmatic in 2011 from Irwin Industrial Tool Co., a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid Inc., for $51 million.

At the time of the deal, Worthington officials said the acquisition increased its product mix, adding new products, such as solder and accessories, and provided an entree into the plumbing wholesale channel.
