Tech firm projects doubling employment

Motivated by its impending move to the Culver Road Armory and a desire to become better known in its headquarters' locale, Consilium 1 LLC plans to grow by 40 percent in 2014, double its employees in Rochester and add three locations.
The cloud and IT management service company has 45 employees at its current Linden Oaks office and plans to increase to more than 90 employees in 2014. The employees are expected to be added to the engineering, sales and back-end office areas. The company did not disclose its revenues.
While Consilium, founded in 1996, employs more than 500 people nationwide, it has been operating under the radar here.
"We've again gone about our business kind of quietly," said Thomas Thomson, CEO and president. "We've stayed more focused on doing really good work for customers and delivering on the things where we have significant capabilities, and letting services grow as a result of customer referrals and more word-of-mouth."
The company also has offices in Buffalo; Atlanta; Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago; Cincinnati; Las Vegas and Phoenix. The planned new locations have not been announced, but they will be in the Northeast, Southeast and West.
In February, Consilium 1 is to become the newest tenant at the Culver Road Armory. The move is a chance to start fresh.
"We're going to have more visibility. We're kind of out there in the open a little bit more, we're going to have kind of an updated fresher kind of look and feel from a facilities standpoint and the technology infrastructure that we're deploying," Thomson said. "Most importantly, the transformation of the company that is going on right now is all about what is going on with cloud computing, so that is driving (the changes)."
As the largest office tenant, Consilium 1 will be above Fleet Feet Sports in the second building in a 10,000-square-foot space. A tech firm was important to the Armory's renovation.
"When I envision a modern or contemporary building like Building 2, I naturally think of that genre of business, so it feels like a very natural fit," said Fred Rainaldi Jr., managing partner of Whitney Baird Associates LLC, an affiliate of Rainaldi Real Estate. "Because we have kind of every slice of professional offering between the law firms (and) the design firms with Building 1, this is kind of that missing piece.
"(It's) having a fresh technology firm with a foothold in multiple places across the country ..., and they have an incredible client roster that just brings some prestige to the project."
Armory officials are excited to have come across a company looking to move, expand and rebrand itself within a market like Rochester, Rainaldi said.
"Those types of things don't come around that often, but this-we feel very blessed to have this opportunity," he said.
By leveraging traditional IT services with cloud computing, Consilium 1 continues to adapt to its industry. Working with federal partners has been a strategic move this year.
Its federal partner, Autonomic Resources LLC, was the first company certified under the government's Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, which provides security assessment, authorization and monitoring for cloud products and services. Consilium 1 security experts brought the Autonomic Resources Cloud Platform through the Pentagon's accreditation process. The company also reviewed the standing security authorization package for the cloud platform.
"It was hard, it cost a lot of money and it took vision to understand that that was important and that as computing changes in the broader marketplace, things like security and meeting the broader standards are key to whether businesses are going to adopt or not," Thomson said. "Whether you're in health care or financial or other kinds of critical infrastructure, these security standards are going to make their way out from a security point and be applied to the broader marketplace for the industries the government deems as critical infrastructure."
With growth and expansion the company makes sure to adjust.
"We're incredibly nimble," said Erica Storie, senior marketing manager. "It's a pleasant surprise. As you grow, sometimes you get roadblocks, you get management roadblocks, there's a whole ladder of approvals and process, but we've managed to navigate that really well."
"Focusing on broad initiatives, on the end customer's need, good customer service, security-all those things have remained common over the course of all those years, and what's changed is the technology platforms upon which you deliver capabilities," Thomson said. "We try to focus on making sure we apply critically to the core principles to make sure that the new technologies are deployed and help businesses grow in a new fashion."
He added: "Although we're approaching 20 years in business, we're kind of a hidden gem in the offerings that we provide on a broad scale, on a global basis."
