Mario's, Bazil's workers heading to Italy

Owners of Mario’s Italian Steakhouse and Bazil’s are bringing two dozen employees to Italy to learn more about the foundation of the Daniele family’s restaurant business.

The 24 employees were selected based on length of employment, desire to learn and recommendations from supervisors, restaurant officials said.

Each day will be spent observing one restaurant and assisting the culinary staff in purchasing, preparing and serving lunch and dinner meals, officials said.

The group will bring back detailed notes, video and photo records, and techniques that they can incorporate into the Rochester restaurants.

Co-owner Anthony Daniele has led staff trips in 1997 and 2001 to Italy, and in 2003 he brought a group to Napa Valley, Calif.

"There is simply no training that could even come close to the effectiveness of actually tasting, smelling and seeing the Italian cuisine in Italy" Daniele said. "For most of this group, this is the first time they have ever left the U.S., it's a reward to them for their hard work and dedication to our family business, and I have to say, as equally rewarding for me and my family to be able to share this experience and see the looks on their faces when we are there.”

The restaurants employ roughly 210 employees.
