Sabres hire Tim Murray as new GM

Rochester Business Journal
January 9, 2014

The Buffalo Sabres on Thursday announced the hiring of Tim Murray as general manager.

Murray has been the assistant GM with the Ottawa Senators since 2007, and general manager of the Senators’ American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton.

The Rochester Americans are the Sabres’ AHL affiliate.

Murray was director of player personnel for the Anaheim Ducks from 2002 to 2005, and assistant director of player personnel for the New York Rangers from 2005 to 2007.

Buffalo has been without a general manager since Darcy Regier was fired in November, after which Pat LaFontaine was hired as president and Ted Nolan brought back as coach to replace Ron Rolston.

Buffalo also announced that Craig Patrick has been hired as a special assistant and adviser. Patrick has been a senior adviser for the Columbus Blue Jackets since December 2011.

Patrick has been a hockey executive for 30 years, starting in 1981 as GM of the Rangers. He was executive vice president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1989 to 2006.

Patrick also was general manager of the 2002 U.S. Olympic hockey team that won a silver medal, and assistant manager of the 1980 team that won a gold medal after beating the Soviet Union in the famed Miracle on Ice.

Murray and Patrick come aboard a day after the Sabres announced that Randy Cunneyworth has been promoted to special assistant and player development coach for the Amerks.

Cunneyworth will serve as a liaison between the Amerks and Sabres, representatives of the National Hockey League team said. Cunneyworth, a former Sabres player and Amerks coach, rejoined the organization in November as a scout.
