Area DirecTV subscribers may lose Weather Channel

Rochester’s 57,000 DirecTV Group Inc. subscribers may lose access to around-the-clock weather information from the Weather Channel Interactive Inc. as early as tomorrow due to the lack of a mutual contract agreement.

According to Nielsen data, 11 percent of all TV subscribers in Rochester will be affected, with more than 800,000 households across the state, and 20 million nationwide.

The Weather Channel on Saturday launched a campaign aimed at keeping consumer access to 24/7 weather program, trying to showcase the role of the service as a critical aspect of New York’s public safety during extreme weather circumstances. The campaign is focused on DirecTV as it is the only cable provider that is relinquishing the service.

The agreement must be reached by Tuesday in order for the service to remain.

“For DirecTV to take us off their lineup would be deeply irresponsible to its customers who not only count on The Weather Channel on a day-to-day basis, but depend on us before, during and after severe weather events,” said David Kenny, chairman and CEO of the Weather Co., parent company of the Weather Channel. “We have offered the industry’s best rate for our programming and are committed to reaching an agreement.”
