Vuzix Corp. has entered into an agreement with an undisclosed brand to develop waveguide optics technology for a pair of the company’s smart glasses.

The brand name and contract details were not disclosed at the customer’s request, Vuzix officials said.

The agreement is the first of its kind for Vuzix, a Rochester-based company known for smart glasses and video eyewear. The companies will work together to develop prototypes that include Vuzix see-through optics engines for Smart Glasses. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2015.

More programs will result in commercializing Smart Glasses; the ultimjate goal is to create a line of Smart Glasses that look like designer sunglasses.

The wearable computing device market is forecasted to grow to 485 million annual device shipments by 2018, including over 75 million in the smart glasses category, according to Allied Business Intelligence Inc.

"With the anticipated growth in this sector, those wearable products that address the real needs of the customer stand to garner the largest market share," said Paul Travers, Vuzix president and CEO.
