Airport offers program for travelers with special needs

Passengers with special travel needs can now be pre-screened at the Greater Rochester International Airport and learn about available services, officials announced Thursday.

The early introduction program, ROC Your Flight, is designed to ease apprehensions of those with special needs and their families prior to their flights, officials said. It allows participants to experience first-hand the airport and the passenger security screening processes prior to flying.

The community outreach program was unveiled by Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks, along with representatives of the Arc of Monroe County and the federal Transportation Security Administration.

“This orientation-type program is part of TSA’s nationwide efforts to improve passenger outreach and offers a valuable opportunity for TSA personnel to experience individual traveler needs,” said John McCaffery, the administration’s federal security director in Rochester, said in a statement.

A course is being held this weekend with further courses planned in spring, early summer and early fall.
