State files felony charge against nursing home aide

The state has filed a felony complaint against a Genesee County Nursing Home nurse’s aide who allegedly endangered a 100-year-old Alzheimer’s resident, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Tuesday.

Sarah Waclawski is charged with a single count of endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.

Her arrest traces to a March 27, 2013 incident in which she allegedly transferred the resident from a wheelchair to a bed and back to the wheelchair. After being put back in the wheelchair, the resident, a woman, fell out of the chair, hitting her head and sustaining a laceration.

According to the complaint, Waclawski then got another aide to help her put the injured woman back in bed but failed to get medical help and did not report the incident. The fall only came to light an hour later after a nurse saw Waclawski wiping blood off the resident’s forehead and observed several bloody wipes in the room.

Waclawski pled not guilty Tuesday in Batavia City Court and was released on her own recognizance. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to four years in prison. She is due back in court March 24.
