MCC's Kress named to Common Core review panel

Monroe Community College president Anne Kress has been named to a state panel that will review the rollout of the much-criticized Common Core standards, officials announced Friday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, during his executive budget address last month, backed Common Core but not its implementation. The 11-member panel will undertake an immediate review of the rollout.

The panel will deliver its recommendations prior to the end of the current state legislative session, Cuomo said.

“The Common Core standards are a critical part of transforming New York’s schools, and the failure to effectively implement them has led to confusion and frustration among students and their families,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The panel is comprised of national experts, state legislators, parents, educators, and business and community leaders, Cuomo said.

Stanley Litow, vice president of corporate citizenship and corporate affairs at IBM Corp. and president of the IBM International Foundation, will serve as chairman of the panel. Kress is the only panel member from the Rochester area.
