The parent company of Gunlocke Inc., a Wayland, Steuben County-based office furniture maker, has been named by Chief Executive magazine as one of the world’s Best Companies for Leadership Development for 2014.

Iowa-based HNI Corp. was named to the list after being ranked on criteria including formal leadership development processes, CEO commitment to leadership development programs, depth of the leadership funnel (as measured by the percentage of mid-level and senior management positions filled internally) and shareholder value performance metrics.

HNI, with annual sales near $2.1 billion, owns Gunlocke, which employs some 820 local workers and ranked first on the most recent Rochester Business Journal list of office furniture and equipment dealers.

The companies on the magazine’s list were chosen from among public companies with minimum annual revenue of $1 billion.

"We are pleased to be recognized by one of the most respected publications in the field of organizational leadership," said Stan Askren, HNI Corp. chairman, president and CEO, in s statement.  “The recent recognition … reflects the strength of a culture which encourages and recognizes excellence, as well as members’ devotion to making our company – and each other – successful."
