Rochester ranks among nation's 10 smartest cities

Rochester is home to a lot of smart people, a recent online study shows.

The city ranked eighth on the Smartest Cities study conducted by CreditDonkey.com.

To determine the results, CreditDonkey used U.S. Census data to find the statistical average of residents with bachelor's degrees in each metropolitan area. The site also counted how many Mensa International Ltd. chapters there are in the city's state, looked at the city's rate of property crimes and the number of library card holders there.

Rochester, the only New York city ranked in the Top 10, has 32.3 percent of residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher, 2,645 property crimes per 100,000 people and 0.6 library card holders per 1,000. New York has seven Mensa chapters.

“Rochester is tops in New York not just because of the proportion of people with at least a bachelor's degree, but because of its citizens' propensity to use the library,” the site reported, noting that New York City’s library rate per 1,000 people was 0.5.

San Jose, Calif., topped the list, followed by Boston and San Diego.

CreditDonkey is a credit card comparison and financial education website.
