Effort aims to create business improvement district downtown

The Rochester Downtown Development Corp. is leading an effort to establish a business improvement district, officials announced Monday, with the first in a series of informational meetings scheduled for Tuesday.

The first meeting begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and is scheduled for 90 minutes.

A second meeting is Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 at the Eastman School of Music’s Hatch Recital Hall. A third meeting is Friday at the same time in the Kate Gleason Auditorium at the Rochester Central Library. Additional meetings follow through June 3.

A draft model for the BID has been created and is available for inspection, officials said. Downtown property owners will vote on a final model through a petition process. If approved, BID operations would begin in July 2015.

A BID is a defined geographic area with a self-imposed maintenance fee required from property owners within the district, officials said. The fee is used to enhance services beyond those provided by the city of Rochester.

Services traditionally include sidewalk cleaning, safety, hospitality, beautification, marketing and promotion, officials said.
