Rochester Academy of Medicine to honor McIntyre

Rochester Business Journal
May 5, 2014

The Rochester Academy of Medicine has named John McIntyre M.D. the 2014 winner of the Albert David Kaiser Medal.

The academy presents the Kaiser Award annually to a member of the local medical community who has distinguished themselves professionally and in service to the community, said Donald Goldman M.D., chairman of the academy’s Honorary Awards Committee.

McIntyre is a retired chairman of Unity Health System’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. He continues to practice locally and is involved in research on how to integrate psychiatry and primary care. A past president of the American Psychiatric Association, McIntyre has been instrumental in setting standards for psychiatry nationally as leader of the association’s clinical-practice guideline project.

Five recipients of the academy’s Distinguished Service Award are to be honored alongside McIntyre. The award is bestowed annually to recognize area medical professionals who have given back to the local community, Goldman said. This year’s honorees are:

•    Bernard Farnand M.D., a Unity Health System internist;
•    Robert George M.D.; an anesthesiologist with Rochester Surgical Associates P.C.;
•    Avice O’Connell M.D., a University of Rochester Medical Center radiologist and director of women’s imaging;
•    Franklin Richeson M.D., a URMC cardiologist and advisory dean with the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry; and
•    Louise Woerner, founder and chairman of HCR Homecare.

Kaiser Medal awardees are chosen from the field of previous Distinguished Service Award honorees. Kaiser Medal and Distinguished Service Award presentation ceremonies are slated for the Academy of Medicine’s May 13 annual meeting.
