May 7, 2014

The New York State Canal System launched its 190th season Wednesday, touting its generation of $380 million annually in economic activity for Upstate New York.

The Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals provide an artery for commercial shipping and for recreation and tourism, officials said. Commercial shipping on the system exceeded 100,000 tons in 2013.

The Erie Canal connects the Hudson River to Lake Erie, extending through Monroe, Orleans and Wayne counties in the Rochester area.
