The University of Rochester Medical Center on Thursday announced the creation of the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

The Wilmot Institute’s goal is to provide the highest level of care to individuals in Rochester and throughout Western New York, officials said. It is to serve as a new organizational structure for all of its clinical and research programs in cancer and research facilities. It also kicked off a fund drive aiming to raise $30 million to support expanded research efforts.

Once a single location, UR’s cancer complex now includes the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, new satellite treatment centers, a 100-member research team and programs such as the recently launched cancer survivorship program.

The Wilmot Institute’s annual patient visits now stand at 64,000 and are expected to keep growing, said Jonathan Friedberg M.D., institute director.

The fund drive campaign co-leader, Richard Bell Sr., a retired business owner and cancer survivor who was treated at Wilmot, has primed the campaign with a $1.5 million donation.
