CEO Berk gives $1.5 million to establish URMC professorship

A $1.5 million gift from University of Rochester Medical Center CEO Bradford Berk M.D. and his family, along with $500,000 supplied by the URMC Department of Medicine, will help establish a professorship devoted to cardiovascular medicine, UR officials said Wednesday.

The Bradford C. Berk M.D. Ph.D. Distinguished Professorship is meant to attract or retain top-flight researchers and physicians to URMC’s cardiovascular program.

The endowed chair’s first appointee, URMC cardiologist Arthur Moss M.D., sets the standard for the caliber of individual he would like to see hold his namesake professorship, said Berk, who is himself a cardiologist and researcher.

A half-century veteran URMC physician and research scientist, Moss is an expert in electrical disturbances noted for several key discoveries relating to prevention and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

The gift reflects Berk’s “loyalty and commitment to the university where his career reached its pinnacle,” UR president Joel Seligman said.

Berk trained at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating in 1981. He returned to URMC as chair of cardiology and chief of medicine in 1998 after holding positions at the Harvard Medical School, Emory University and the University of Washington.
