Rochester Business Journal
May 14, 2014

Rochester is a fairly friendly city when it comes to employees of small companies, ranking among the top half of metro areas nationwide in a new survey by WalletHub.

Best & Worst Cities to Work for a Small Business in 2014 ranks Rochester 44th among the largest 100 cities, just behind Buffalo, which ranked 43rd, but ahead of Syracuse, which ranked 50th.

Buffalo also had the distinction of ranking third in terms of the lowest average number of hours worked at 32.4.

WalletHub—a social website launched by Evolution Finance that has financial tools and information for consumers and small business owners—used 10 metrics ranging from net small business job growth and industry variety to hours worked and average wages for new hires.

Minneapolis ranked first on the list, while Stockton, Calif., ranked 100th. New York City has the highest net small-business job growth, according to the report, and Lakeland, Fla., has the lowest.

Miami has the greatest number of small businesses per 1,000 residents, and Bakersfield, Calif., has the lowest.
