SmartDialysis is $10,000 richer after the University of Rochester student startup took home the top prize in the eighth annual Mark Ain Business Model Competition.

SmartDialysis, the product of five students at the university, produces a portable hemodialysis unit meant to significantly improve the quality of life of more than 600,000 end-stage renal disease patients in the United States.

Second place and a $2,500 cash prize in the competition went to Ovlay, a company that produces tiny lenses inserted into the cornea to improve near-sighted vision and reduce the need for reading glasses in older adults. Third place and $1,000 in cash went to ClarElast, a company that offers a painless and cost-effective tool for diagnosing chronic liver disease in its early stages.

The competition is open to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students at the university. This year's competition saw 21 teams representing the Eastman School of Music, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Simon Business School.

The university's Center for Entrepreneurship and the student-run Simon Entrepreneurs Association offered three workshops to prepare students for the competition, covering topics that included idea generation, market research, pitch and presentation.
