Rochester Lancers join new soccer league

The Rochester Lancers will be part of the newly created Major Arena Soccer League, with at least 24 teams beginning play in October, league representatives announced Monday.

The Lancers announced last week officials would be in Baltimore for a meeting the team described as the largest in the history of pro soccer.

“This is an exciting time for our sport,” Lancers vice president Rich Randall said in a statement. “The Lancers will attend this meeting with other top American pro indoor franchises. It’s also very possible, that it can become the largest professional soccer league in the country.”

The Baltimore Blast and Harrisburg Heat both posted news releases on their websites Monday announcing the league. The MASL teams will be divided among divisions based on their location and play 20 regular-season games, the teams said.

The Lancers and the Syracuse Silver are among the 24 franchises committed to the new league. Rochester, Syracuse, Baltimore, the Missouri Comets and the Milwaukee Wave are switching from the Major Indoor Soccer League to partner with teams from the Professional Arena Soccer League.

“A lot of owners checked their egos at the door and worked hard to make this happen,” Harrisburg owner and CEO John Wilsbach said in the team’s statement.

Arena soccer franchises have until June 1 to apply for membership in the MASL, officials said.
