RIT buys system to improve nanotechnology capabilities

Rochester Institute of Technology is purchasing a system that will upgrade its cleanroom facility and help drive growth in the optics and photonics industries. The equipment is being purchased with the help of a state grant announced this week and federal funding.

The university is purchasing a metal organic vapor phase epitaxy system for growth of novel materials, thin film crystals and nanostructures. RIT will be the only university in the state with the system, which will provide new capabilities in nanotechnology applications.

RIT is contributing resources to the purchase and installation of the system and it will receive a $300,000 state grant through Empire State Development and the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council. The National Science Foundation has provided partial funding for RIT’s proposal to acquire the system.

The $1.5 million project will begin immediately with completion by the end of the year, RIT said.

“RIT is very grateful to Governor Cuomo for this investment,” said RIT President William Destler, in a statement. “We have already received inquiries from companies that want to use this equipment, including one that has been purchasing these services overseas and wants to bring it back to the United States.”
