Wegmans to award $4.9 million in employee scholarships

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. on Wednesday announced it will grant employee scholarships to 1,766 new and returning students for the upcoming school year.

The Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program is awarding $4.9 million in college tuition for the 2014-15 academic year.

The company has awarded assistance to more than 30,000 employees since the program began in 1984. To date, the company has spent $95 million on tuition through the program.

“My grandfather established this longstanding tradition with the aim of helping young people succeed,” said Colleen Wegman, president. “The program has grown considerably, and we’re proud to continue helping our people reach their academic and career goals.”

A celebration to honor the scholarship recipients and graduates of the program is planned for noon to 2 p.m. June 7 at Wegmans stores.

Part-time employee scholarship recipients are eligible to receive up to $1,500 a year for four years with a maximum of $6,000 awarded. Full-time employees can receive up to $2,200 a year for four years with up to $8,800 in total assistance.

There are no limitations on the number of scholarships awarded, and the course of study of an eligible candidate does not matter.
