KeyBank Foundation gives grant to Hillside

At a Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection event Wednesday at Rochester Auditorium Theatre, KeyBank Foundation announced a $185,000 five-year grant.

The Key Scholars Key Skills Initiative will strengthen the Rochester-based non-profit organization’s Jobs Institute for more than 2,400 Rochester city students each year, officials said. The plan is to expand its emphasis on preparing and tracking students into science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

“We are truly honored to receive this generous grant,” said Augustin Melendez, president of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, in a statement.

There is a lack of gender and ethnic diversity of students entering STEM educational programs and career fields, Melendez added.

“With KeyBank Foundation’s significant investment in our newly named Key Scholars Key Skills Initiative, we will continue to expand our program’s focus on exposing our youth to STEM careers, with the goal of helping to address and meet the demand of skilled workers in these fields,” Melendez said.

KeyBank ranks sixth in the Rochester market with local deposits of $1.1 million.
