M&T Bank Corp. and 11 other banks with a presence in New York have reached agreements with state officials following complaints of discrimination from visually impaired customers.

The banks have agreed to comply with state law by providing services to the visually impaired, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. Those services include informational material and forms in large print, Braille and audio, among other measures.

The 12 banks also will train customer service staff on handling calls or requests from the visually impaired, the state said.

An investigation by the state Division of Human Rights discovered a lack of access to websites at some of the banks, a lack of documents in alternative formats and customer service representatives who lacked information regarding accessibility features when contacted by phone, the state said.

M&T, based in Buffalo, is the market share leader in Rochester with local deposits of $3.8 billion, data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. shows.

The other banks involved are TD Bank, Capital One, New York Community Bank, Valley National Bank, Ponce de Leon Federal Bank, Emigrant Savings Bank, Banco Popular, Dime Savings Bank, Flushing Savings Bank, Northfield Savings Bank and Hudson Valley Bank.
